Share your HP Photosmart Printers, multiple computers


Introduction


Figure 1 below shows a diagram of a locally shared printer. When using this method of networking a printer, the printer is connected to and installed on a single computer that acts as a host (or server) to the printer. All other computers on the network become clients when printing to that printer.

 NOTE: By installing the printer in a network environment the server or host computer, will have full functionality. The client computer will have print only functionality.






Verify that the computer meets system requirements

Check to ensure that the intended host computer meets the system requirements for the specific printer. HP recommends that the host computer be the newest computer on the network with the latest version of Windows installed.




Setup the printer on the host computer


Install printer software on the host computer

Follow the procedures specified in the installation quick start for your printer model. If those instructions are not available, follow the appropriate procedure below for your connection type to install the CD version of the printer software.


USB Install




  1. Turn on the computer.


  2. Disable any anti-virus and or firewall applications.


  3. Insert the software CD into the CD-ROM drive. The disk should autoplay. If the setup program does not launch after a few seconds follow the procedure below to launch setup.



    1. Click Start , then Run .


    2. Click Browse .


    3. In the Run dialog box, click the down arrow next to the Look In drop down box to view a list of available disk drives.


    4. Select the CD-ROM drive letter that has the Photosmart software CD in it.


    5. Locate a file titled Setup or Setup.exe with a blue icon that looks similar to the monitor and an open box. Once located double click on the icon.


    6. In the Run dialog box, click Open or OK .




  4. Follow the on screen prompts to install the printer locally.










     NOTE: This does not install the printer as a network printer.







Parallel Install




  1. Make sure the computer is off.


  2. Connect the LPT cable to the computer. Give each thumbscrew one or two twists to secure the cable.









    WARNING: Over-tightening the cable head thumb-screws can cause the cable to fail or become unreliable.




  3. Turn off the printer and wait about ten seconds, then disconnect the power adapter from both the printer and the power source.


  4. Connect the LPT cable to the printer. Close both locking clips.


  5. Connect the power adapter to a wall outlet.


  6. Connect the power adapter to the printer and turn on the printer.


  7. Turn on the computer.


  8. Cancel the new hardware wizard when it appears.


  9. Disable any anti-virus and or firewall applications.


  10. Insert the software CD into the CD-ROM drive. The disk should autoplay. If the setup program does not launch after a few seconds follow the procedure below to launch setup.



    1. Click Start , then Run .


    2. Click Browse .


    3. In the Run dialog box, click the down arrow next to the Look In drop down box to view a list of available disk drives.


    4. Select the CD-ROM drive letter that has the Photosmart software CD in it.

     NOTE: This does not install the printer as a network printer.








Sharing the printer on the network




  1. Click Start .


  2. Click Settings .


  3. Click Printers .


  4. Right-click the HP Photosmart Series Printer icon.


  5. Click Sharing .


  6. Select Shared As .


  7. Enter the name you want to use for the printer on the network. Use a name of eight or fewer characters. To restrict access to the printer, enter a password in the Password field; a password will then be required in order to use the printer.










     NOTE: See the Windows readme or help files for more information about sharing the printer.



  8. Click OK .







Installing printer software on each client computer

Install the HP Photosmart printer software on each of the client computers by following the steps below.


Windows 95, 98, and Me client computers




  1. From the Windows Start menu, select Settings , and then select Printers .


  2. Double-click Add Printer , then click Next .


  3. Choose Network Printer as the printer connection, then click Next .


  4. Click Browse to locate the print server and printer, click OK , then click Next (recommended).

    OR

    Enter the path or queue name of the printer. For example, type: \\HostComputerName\PrinterName or \\ServerName\QueueName , then click Next .


  5. Click Have Disk , and insert the HP Photosmart printer software CD into your CD-ROM drive.










     NOTE: If your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements, the printer software displays a warning dialog box and the installation cannot continue. Click Cancel to close the dialog box.




  6. In Install From Disk , click Browse , then browse to the correct folder (see the table located at the end of this document for the correct CD-ROM location).










     NOTE: In this case, the enu denotes English. Codes for other languages are listed in the table within the Language codes section of this document. Use the table to select the appropriate language and operating system.




  7. Click OK , then click OK again to close the Install From Disk dialog box. .


  8. Click Next .


  9. Accept the default name for your printer (recommended) or enter a new name. To use this printer as your default printer, click Yes .


  10. Click Finish .





Windows NT 4.0/2000 and XP client computers










 NOTE: Administrator privileges are required to install the printer software on a Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP system. Close any virus protection programs or other software programs that are open and running on the computer, except Windows Explorer.






  1. From the Windows Start menu, select Settings , then select Printers (for Windows 2000)

    OR

    From the Windows Start menu, select Printers and Faxes (for Windows XP).


  2. Double-click Add Printer , then click Next .


  3. Choose Network Printer as the printer connection, then click Next.


  4. Click Next to browse for a printer (recommended)

    OR

    Select Type the printer name and enter the name and path of the printer

    OR

    Select Connect to a printer on the Internet or on your intranet and enter the address of the printer.


  5. In the Shared printers box, double-click the host computer on which the printer is installed, select the printer, then click Next .










     NOTE: If the host computer does not use Windows 2000 or XP, you will need to install the printer software from the printer software CD or from a shared network drive using the steps below.


    1. Click Have Disk , and insert the HP Photosmart printer software CD into your CD-ROM drive.










       NOTE: If your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements, the printer software displays a warning dialog box and the installation cannot continue. Click Cancel to close the dialog box.




    2. In Install From Disk , click Browse , then browse to the correct folder (see the table located at the end of this document for the correct CD-ROM location).

  6. To use this printer as your default printer, click Yes , then click Next .


  7. Click Finish .





Locating inf files by operating system and driver version

Located below is a list of file locations for each printer driver version. Locate the printer driver version on the CD that shipped with the printer . Note that not all versions of printer drivers support Windows 95 or Windows NT. [CD-ROM drive letter]: \[language code]\win9x\HPHP??XX.INF


Windows 95, 98, and Me

In the square brackets substitute the appropriate value for the CD-ROM drive (typically D, E, F, or G) and the language code.

For printer software version 4.x use the following location: [CD-ROM drive letter]: \[language code] \drivers\win9x_me\hphp9x11.inf .

For printer software version 5.x use the following location: [CD-ROM drive letter]: \[language code]\drivers\win9x_me\hphp9x12.inf .










 NOTE: Windows 95 is not supported by these versions of the printer software.



For printer software version 6.x use the following location: [CD-ROM drive letter]: \[language code]\drivers\win9x_me\hphp9x13.inf .



Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP

In the square brackets substitute the appropriate value for the CD-ROM drive (typically D, E, F, or G) and the language code.

For printer software version 4.x use the following location: [CD-ROM drive letter]: \[language code]\drivers\win2k_xp\hphp2k11.inf .

For printer software version 5.x use the following location: [CD-ROM drive letter]: \[language code]\drivers\win2k_xp\hphp2k12.inf .

For printer software version 6.x use the following location: [CD-ROM drive letter]: \[language code]\drivers\win2k_xp\hphp2k13.inf .



Language codes

When performing an add printer installation in Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, Me, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, browse to the INF file for the language of the operating system.
